Embracing Tourism
We are fortunate in this rural community, Brockville and region, to have a diverse economic landscape. It is essential that we work together, aligning our collective resources to both attracting and retaining business in every sector. This approach will ensure our growth and allow us to take advantage of every opportunity.
In 2002, the Chamber saw an opportunity to meet its economic development mandate by contracting with the City of Brockville to deliver tourism services in this area. Tourism had been identified as a worldwide growth industry and our location, natural resources and rich history positioned us well to reap the benefits of this increasing market. The tourism team, including dedicated volunteers and staff, proceeded to improve visitor and operator services, increase operator and regional partnerships and create effective external marketing campaigns. In 2005, Ontario Tourism, released its strategic plan for tourism growth which included five key elements; 1. Destination and Experience Development, 2. Partnerships and Resource Development, 3. Visitor Focused, 4. Strategic Marketing and 5. Image and Awareness. Our tourism team was in the process of developing its own plan and was quick to adopt the directions identified by the Ontario government. The government’s plan identified seven areas in Ontario for destination development and thanks to the work of our regional marketing partnership and support of Leeds-Grenville MPP, Bob Runciman, the 1000 Islands and St. Lawrence River was included. The first step in developing our area as a destination was to complete an audit called the Premier Ranked Tourist Destination Framework. This project was has been conducted in coordination with our regional partners from Cornwall to Kingston and was funded by the municipal, provincial and federal governments. The final report is close to being published and we are excited to integrate the recommendations into our strategy for tourism development.
Tourism as an industry provides many benefits to a community including direct dividends and tax revenues, employment, economic diversification, businesses and investment, cultural preservation, recreational facilities, beautification and community pride. Today, tourism continues to be a significant industry in our local economy. In 2004, $188,744,895 in spending by all visitors in Leeds & Grenville generated $131,929,000 in direct, indirect and induced contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP). This is an increase of $12,984,482 from 2003 in spending. Total taxes generated as a result of visitor spending is $81,055,000 which is an increase of $18,692,000. Municipal taxes that accrue to United Counties of Leeds & Grenville are $4,083,000, an increase of $428,000. Tourism provides 2,449 full-time, part-time and seasonal jobs within the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and generates labour income and salaries of $67,999,000. This is a growth of 206 jobs from 2003. (Source: Ontario Ministry of Tourism Regional Tourism Profiles).
